IMPACT OF SALINIZATION AND LIMITED FRESHWATER FOR PRACTICAL USE – Freshwater on the Hogeland

On Monday, October 7, 2024, the SALTA Knowledge Cluster Salinization was a guest speaker at LTO Noord, Het Hogeland department (Groningen). The theme of the evening was: Impact of salinization and limited freshwater for practical use.

The Het Hogeland department organizes various annual meetings on current topics relevant to the region. Peter Prins kicked off the evening by explaining what salinization is and its impact on the soil and crops. What trends are exacerbating salinization? And how can we respond to these challenges?

Peter then explained the mission of the SALTA Knowledge Cluster Salinization and its key focus areas. The thematic tables, knowledge agenda, and the role of the practical coach were discussed. Minou Hegge, practical coach for Groningen, elaborated on her role in the region. As a practical coach, she visits various agricultural entrepreneurs in Groningen to take soil samples and determine the soil’s salt content (EC). She collects these samples using a comprehensive toolkit that is easy to carry into the field. Minou gave a brief demonstration of the FieldScout sensor in the room, showing how the EC in the soil is measured directly in the field. Additionally, the initial results of the 2024 measurements were shared and explained.

Minou once again emphasized that if entrepreneurs have questions about salinization and freshwater availability, she is eager to hear them so that SALTA can address these issues. It was an interactive meeting with many questions from the attending entrepreneurs.
